Debt can be harder to deal with if you’re also coping with something else. That might be a mental or physical health condition, a disability, a bereavement, caring responsibilities, domestic abuse, a language barrier or low confidence with reading or numbers. Many people are in this position, and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

How to tell us

  • When the adviser calls, you can tell them anything that would help – for example, if you’d prefer to talk at a certain time of day, need information in writing, or want someone you trust to speak on your behalf.

The adviser will only use this information to help you, and will explain how they handle it. See our privacy policy.

Extra protection from bailiffs

If you’re vulnerable, bailiffs and creditors should treat you differently:

  • Bailiffs can’t enter your home if the only people there are children under 16 or vulnerable people.
  • Enforcement companies are expected to identify vulnerable people and pause or adapt enforcement, and many councils will take a debt back from bailiffs if you’re vulnerable.
  • If you’re receiving mental health crisis treatment, a debt adviser can apply for mental health crisis Breathing Space, which protects you for as long as your treatment lasts plus 30 days.
